Katy Perry is getting some negative press in Australia due to an insensitive advertisement for her upcoming tour, Witness, where she tells her dog they should go “chase some koalas”. The problem is that these cute little cuddly bears get attacked and killed by dogs every year.
Says one vet in Australia, Claire Madden,
“This is just absolute ignorance from Perry and Myer. [It’s] inappropriate on so many levels. Perry is a role model to so many young people, and this just destroys all the good work we do to try to encourage people not to let their dogs come into contact with koalas.”
The purpose of the advert is to promote her Witness tour by giving away free tickets in a competition open to Myer One members. After registering with your Myer One member number, you need to shop to be entered into a drawing to win a batch of four tickets. Only transactions of $120 or more qualify and there is no limit to the number of transactions you can make. There are a total of 8,000 tickets available to give away.
Personally, I couldn’t help but notice the one eye sign over the letter “r” in Myer, the name of Australia’s chain of department stores that have been struggling recently. We’re sure this hasn’t helped much with their image.
